I thought crayons were just for coloring pictures in a coloring book. At least, that’s all I’ve done with them. Then I saw this challenge and took it. This experience opened my eyes! I’m encouraged to do more!!

To start conversations with our children about diversity it needs to begin with the little things. Diverse children books, diverse television shows and crayons. As a little black girl, I knew the skin tone crayon did not represent me and my skin color. I would never want my children to feel what I felt. Having multiracial children I make an effort for them to feel represented in all they see and do. That's why we were so excited to use @crayola Colors of the World crayons. Nothing brought me more joy than see my children match their own and their siblings skin tones to the crayons. I know it may seem weird but I saw my family in this box and that made my heart so happy.

I was inspired by the diversity crayon challenge. I haven’t used crayons since I was a child. Drawing most of my diversities in one portrait.

I created a some-what caricature of myself with the drawing utensil in my hair. And I couldn't help but add people-like silhouettes in the background using all of Crayola's Colors of the World!

“I Am Me” is a self love illustration by Jade, to herself. This portrait inspires Jade to always love and respect who she is (especially at school). It doesn’t matter if Jade is wearing her uniform or her pjs...she’s her

My daughter enjoyed picking out her skin tone colors and drawing a #trueselfie portrait. I'm amazed at how many shades there are. Now my children can draw pictures of themselves and their friends. What's your skin tone color?

Crayola crayons + portraits = FUN. I'm so happy we can use colors other than brown, orange, yellow, and peach for skin now! I drew myself wearing earbuds because music is my biggest artistic inspiration. : - )

This year, Crayola is offering a new pack of crayons called Colors of the World, featuring tons of skin tones to help everyone create their own self portraits. It always drove me crazy that skin colors were hard to find in crayons, but now everyone can create artwork that really represents themselves. We were thrilled to check out these new crayons and create our own self portraits. Head over to the blog to learn more about these fun crayons, and to see how we paired this project with some fun new books. And make sure you share your own self portrait with #trueselfie!
